David and Children's Writing

David in front of the SCBWI banner
David in front of the SCBWI banner, while attending the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators annual conference in at the Universal City Sheraton, July 28-31, 2000.
My first year of writing for children
David wrote one children's story in early 2000, and it was accepted for publication in Boy's Life magazine, with a circulation of 1.4 million, published by the Boy Scouts of America. The editor commisioned a factual history article to accompany the historical short story about an Inuit boy who encounters survivors of Sir John Franklin's doomed Expedition to sail through the Arctic via the Northwest Passage in 1845.The story, "Ooblooria and the Strangers," appeared in the February 2001 issue of Boy's Life, along with David's historical column, "The Real Story of the Franklin Expedition." My new article about diabetes will appear in the November 2001 issue.

Articles
David wrote another article about how modern archeologists are searching for clues about the Franklin expedition's fate. "Hot on a Cold Trail" appeared in the Jan./Feb. 2001 issue of YES Magazine (Young Scientists and Engineers), a science magazine for kids published in Victoria, BC, Canada. A second article, "80 Years of Insulin", appeared in the Nov./Dec 2001 issue of YES Magazine.

Another article, about Diabetes research and the story of two diabetic boy scouts, was accepted by Boy's Life in 2001, date not yet set.
David's Picture Book Projects
Some initial success gave David the belief he ought to try writing for children. He has written more than 20 picture book texts so far, and several were good enough to send out to publishers. It sure takes a long time to hear back. Maybe tomorrow!

Of Course David Is Working on a Middle Grade Novel
High hopes for "Dieter's Brain", an irreverent SF/satire -- a humorous middlegrade novel.

The first page was selected as one of two that definitely would get the whole manuscript read, in the "Love at First Sight" presentation at the SCBWI-Washington... annual conference in Seattle, April 2002.

It's recommended to finish writing the novel before you set up this kind of expectation to live up to. Yikes.
